About This Work

Based on Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella, Carmen is one of ballet's most passionate and dramatic works. The fiery Carmen captivates the soldier Don José, drawing him into a world of jealousy and obsession that ends in tragedy. Roland Petit's landmark 1949 version, set to Bizet's celebrated opera score, reinvented the ballet with sharp, angular movement and raw emotional intensity. Since then, choreographers from Alberto Alonso to Mats Ek have reinterpreted the story, making Carmen one of the most reimagined works in the repertoire.
