Ballet CompanyBerlinArtistic Director: Christian Spuck

Staatsballett Berlin is Germany's largest ballet company, founded in 2004 through the merger of the ballet ensembles of the three major Berlin opera houses: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Komische Oper Berlin. Performing across all three stages, the company occupies a unique position in European dance, bridging institutions with distinct artistic traditions under a single creative umbrella.

Since its founding, the company has been led by a distinguished succession of directors. Vladimir Malakhov shaped its early identity (2004–2014), followed by Nacho Duato, Johannes Öhman and Sasha Waltz (in co-directorship), and Christiane Theobald in an interim capacity. Christian Spuck, formerly of Ballett Zürich, took over as Artistic Director from the 2023–24 season, bringing a dramaturgically rich, literary approach to the repertoire.

Under Spuck's direction, Staatsballett Berlin has deepened its commitment to full-length narrative ballets alongside works by leading contemporary choreographers. The company's broad repertoire spans classical staples such as Giselle and The Sleeping Beauty, neoclassical works by Forsythe and Kylián, and ambitious world premieres. With around 90 dancers from more than 30 countries, it is one of the most cosmopolitan ballet ensembles in Europe.
