Rambert is Britain's National Dance Company and the oldest established dance company in the United Kingdom. Founded by Polish émigré Marie Rambert in 1916, the company gave its first performances in 1926 and continues to lead British contemporary dance into its centenary year in 2026.
Originally established as a classical ballet company, Rambert underwent a major artistic transformation in the 1960s under Richard Alston's visionary leadership. In 1966, Ballet Rambert moved completely from classical ballet to focus on contemporary dance, employing Cunningham technique and abstract works. The company was renamed Rambert Dance Company in 1987 to reflect this fundamental shift in artistic direction.
Under the current artistic direction of Benoit Swan Pouffer, Rambert continues to commission bold and innovative contemporary works from internationally renowned choreographers whilst supporting emerging talent. The company maintains the most far-reaching touring programme of any British contemporary dance company, presenting large-scale works across the UK. Beyond performance, Rambert runs extensive education and community participation initiatives, including classes for early years through professional dancers.
Based at its purpose-built home on the South Bank opposite the National Theatre in London, Rambert has established itself as one of the world's most renowned contemporary dance companies, known for its diverse programming and commitment to moving audiences and artists forward through daring and brilliant contemporary work.
