Ballett Zürich is Switzerland's leading ballet company, resident at the Zürich Opera House (Opernhaus Zürich) and one of the most highly regarded classical dance ensembles in Europe. The company has its origins in the mid-20th century but rose to particular prominence under Heinz Spoerli, who served as ballet director from 1996 to 2012 and established it among the continent's foremost classical companies.
From the 2012–13 season, Christian Spuck — now Artistic Director of Staatsballett Berlin — led Ballett Zürich for a decade, building an internationally celebrated body of work characterised by literary narrative ballets. His full-length productions including Anna Karenina, Leonce and Lena, and Der Sandmann earned wide critical acclaim and were toured to major venues across Europe.
Since August 2023, British choreographer Cathy Marston has served as Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer, bringing her signature dramaturgical depth and focus on literary adaptation to the company's programming. Ballett Zürich performs on the majestic stage of the Opernhaus Zürich, one of Europe's finest opera houses, and maintains a roster of around 40 international dancers drawn from leading conservatoires worldwide.
