Carlos Acosta was born in Havana in 1973 and trained at the National Ballet School of Cuba, winning the Prix de Lausanne in 1990. He was a permanent member of The Royal Ballet from 1998 to 2015, becoming one of the most celebrated ballet dancers of his generation. He became Artistic Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in January 2020 and was awarded a CBE for services to dance in 2014.
